About Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus)
Everything you need to know
Perched on a rocky spur 1,834m above the Obersalzberg, the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) was built in 1938 as a 'Diplomatic Reception House'. Unlike Hitler's actual home (the Berghof, now destroyed), this granite-and-glass masterpiece survived the war completely intact. It's a miracle of 1930s engineering, accessible ONLY via a specialized mountain road blasted through vertical rock and a legendary golden brass elevator hidden deep inside the mountain.

Planning Your Visit
Best Times to Visit
Catch the first bus to have the Great Hall largely to yourself.
The tour groups start heading down, leaving the terrace peaceful for the last few buses.
How Long to Spend
Quick look at the Great Hall, a photo at the summit cross, and back.
Includes the hike to the Mannlgrat ridge, history exhibit, and a full meal.
Pro Tips
Guest Card Discount: If you're staying in Berchtesgaden, show your 'Gästekarte' for a small discount on the bus ticket.
Seat Hack: Sit on the RIGHT side of Bus 849 for the most dramatic vertical views of the Berchtesgaden valley during the ascent.
Don't visit in April. The road is blocked by snow/gates. Opening is usually mid-May.
Skip the Elevator Queue: If the elevator line is long, take the 'Zick-Zack-Weg' path outside. It's a 15-min walk with better photo ops.
Bring €50 cash. Parking machines and mountain kiosks often have broken card terminals.
The Mussolini Fireplace: Look closely at the red Italian marble fireplace in the Great Hall. It was a gift from Mussolini, and you can still see the graffiti carved by Allied soldiers in 1945.
U-Boat Engine Secret: Hidden in a side tunnel is a massive diesel engine from a WWII U-boat, used as an emergency generator. From the outside, its exhaust is disguised as a rock.
The Eva Braun Room: Visit the 'Scharitzstube' (now a side room of the restaurant). It's the brightest room in the house and offers the best views of the Königssee lake.
Hitler's Study: The small office where Hitler rarely worked is now used as a storage room for the cafeteria — a quiet irony of history.
Dress in Layers: Even if it's 25°C in Berchtesgaden, the summit (1,834m) can be windy and freezing. Bring a light jacket.
Engineering Marvels
The building features 1930s heated floors (which take 2 days to pre-heat!) and an elevator that ascends 124m in just 41 seconds. The marble-lined tunnel leading to it was also originally heated to keep VIPs comfortable.
The 'April' Trap
Google Maps might say it's open, but the road is physically gated until May due to avalanche risk. Do not attempt to hike it in spring.
For the Brave: The Mannlgrat Ridge
For experienced hikers, a path leads beyond the summit cross to the Mannlgrat Ridge. It's a 'Klettersteig' (Via Ferrata) that leads toward the Hoher Göll summit. It offers the most spectacular, exposed views but requires sure-footedness.
Common Questions
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Surprisingly, yes. The buses have ramps and the elevator goes directly into the house. The summit cross area is not accessible.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are allowed on the bus (muzzle required) and in the outdoor areas, but rules vary for the interior restaurant.
