Is the Shuttle Bus Running in Winter?

The short answer: sometimes yes, sometimes no. Unlike summer when the horse-drawn carriages and shuttle buses run like clockwork, winter access to Neuschwanstein Castle is highly weather-dependent. Here's what you need to know before planning your winter visit.

Current Status (Winter 2024/25): Shuttle buses operate when road conditions permit. Check the official Hohenschwangau website on the morning of your visit or call the ticket center at +49 8362 930830 for real-time updates.

Your Options

3 Ways to Reach the Castle in Winter

Choose the best transport method based on weather conditions and your preference.

Walk Up (Always Available)

  • 30-40 minutes uphill walk
  • Paved road, but can be icy
  • Bring good winter boots with grip

Pro tip: This is often the most reliable option in winter!

Shuttle Bus (Weather Dependent)

  • €3 uphill / €1.50 downhill
  • Runs every 10-15 minutes when operating
Does NOT run in snow/ice conditions

Horse-Drawn Carriage (Suspended in Winter)

The romantic horse-drawn carriages do not operate during winter months (November - March) due to safety concerns on icy roads.

What About the Marienbrücke Bridge?

Important: The Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) is typically closed during winter due to ice and snow making it dangerous. The path to the bridge is steep and can be extremely slippery. Even when the bridge is technically open, access may be blocked if conditions are unsafe.

Alternative: Tegelberg View

If you have time, drive to the Tegelbergbahn parking lot (about 2km away). Looking back towards the castle from the open fields often provides a clear, snow-covered panorama that doesn't require hiking up icy trails.
