Travel Advisories

Split-System Trap: The main Gondola is easy, but the connecting Chairlift (Hochalpe) to the summit is NOT suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Strict "Revision" Closures: Lifts close completely for maintenance in Spring (mid-March to April) and Autumn (Nov to mid-Dec). Check dates!

Winter Toboggan Logistics: The run ends 6.5km away from the start. You MUST catch the "Rodelbus" back or face a 10km walk.

Aggenstein Hazard: The summit climb behind the hut is T3 alpine terrain. Hiking boots with grip are mandatory. Fatalities happen here.

About Breitenberg (Pfronten)

Everything you need to know

The Breitenberg massif (1,838m) is Pfronten's adventure mountain, offering a high-alpine experience with rare direct rail access. It operates on a 'Split-System': a 4-seater gondola takes you to the Hochalpe plateau, followed by a chairlift to the summit ridge. Home to the Ostlerhütte with its panoramic terrace and the challenging Aggenstein peak, it serves as a gateway to both leisurely family hikes and serious alpine routes.

Pro Tips

Guest Card Value: Generally includes one free ascent/descent daily on the Gondola (but often NOT the chairlift). Check your specific card rules.

Best Sunset Spot: The Ostlerhütte terrace offers 360° views. Overnight stays are possible but book months in advance.

Wind Closure Risk: The upper chairlift shuts down in high winds (Föhn) even if the lower gondola runs. Check the "Panomax" webcam first.

Geology Buffs: The "GEO-Pfad" trail connects to Austria. Bring your passport just in case.

The Ostlerhütte Experience

Perched directly on the ridge at 1,838m, this is a Category 1 alpine hut offering distinctively good food (including vegan options) and panoramic overnight stays.

Winter Toboggan Run

The "Ostlerforstweg" is one of the longest runs in the region (6km). It requires a separate ticket or "Rodelkarte". Helmets are highly recommended.

Common Questions

Is it accessible?

Only partially. The gondola takes wheelchairs, but the chairlift to the top does not. The summit is not accessible for mobility-impaired guests.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, but a "Dog Ticket" (€4 flat rate) is required for both lifts.
